Athens Today: A Timeless Tapestry of History and Vibrancy

Athens is always in season with comfortable and favorable climate conditions for travel and sightseeing. Summer means outdoor cinemas, spectacular performances in ancient amphitheaters and sun swept days and indulgences.
Beyond the ancient walls, Athens embraces its modern side with a wealth of cultural and artistic offerings. Syntagma and Omonia are the main central squares of the town; they are linked by Stadiou Street and Panepistimiou Avenue, along which some of the town’s most beautiful Neoclassical buildings have been erected. Dominating Syntagma Square is the Greek Parliament building and in front of it the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, guarded by the Evzones in Greek traditional costume.
Other areas worth visiting include Monastiraki, Kolonaki, Lycabettus Hill and a few kilometers from the historic center: Faliro, Glyfada, Voula and Vouliagmeni, where you can enjoy the sea breeze.
From there, crossing the Mets neighborhood, the road leads to the First Cemetery, the oldest one in Athens, basically an outdoor sculpture display with a wealth of wonderful monumental tombstones by some of the most important sculptors of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Within the boundary of Athens’ historical center also are the picturesque neighborhoods of Makriyianni (close to the Acropolis, where the Acropolis Museum stands), Ano Petralona, Thiseion (where you will find small interesting museums and scores of cafés, bars and restaurants), Kerameikos and Metaxourgeio, as well as the Gazi area, with the former Gasworks, which now have been turned into a cultural center of the Athens municipality (“Technopolis”).

Piraeus
Piraeus is the main port of Athens, the biggest one in Greece and one of the most important ports of the Mediterranean, a major shipping, industrial and transportation center of the country. City life focuses on the three parts of the port: the central one, the Zea marina and Mikrolimano. A port-city with a fascinating ancient history, vibrant, with sights worth seeing, including important monuments, such as a part of the Long Walls of the 5th century BC, remains of ancient temples and buildings. There are also the neoclassical Municipal Theatre, industrial buildings of the early 20th century and impressive modern buildings such as the Peace & Friendship Stadium and the G.Karaiskakis Stadium.
